Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction

with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.  (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)

Our beautiful Prayer Shawl Ministry has been an active outreach program in the parish for many years – serving the sick, the dying, and the grieving. The handmade shawls and lap robes that we give away are a concrete expression of our love and care for people. For a man who had lost his wife, it was a great comfort and a welcome invitation, which inspired him to start attending daily Mass.

This ministry also bears much fruit for its members, as they come together to knit or crochet. Through prayer and conversation, friendships and connections are formed which reach beyond the meeting, into the parish community. It’s a joyful time for creative outlet and learning as the members are always happy to teach others. Still others support this ministry through donations of finished pieces, skeins of yarn, or financial contributions. And still others experience the blessing of ministering to the recipients in person, letting them know that they are supported, they are not alone, and they are loved.

A typical meeting opens with prayer for the work of our hands and the people who will receive the shawls and lap robes. Conversation and fellowship follow as we work on our current pieces.

If you know someone who would appreciate a reminder

that they are not alone and who would like to be

held up in prayer during a difficult time, contact us for a prayer shawl.
